Your Journey: From Agreement to Decision

Most people who contact us have never seen a settlement agreement before. That’s completely normal. These documents arrive without warning, they’re full of legal language, and there’s usually a deadline attached. It can feel like you’ve been put on the spot.

Here’s what we want you to know: you have time, you have choices, and you have the right to independent legal advice before signing anything. Your employer is legally required to pay for that advice. So the review costs you nothing.

What follows is exactly what happens when you work with us. No surprises. No jargon. Just a clear path from the moment you pick up the phone (or upload your agreement) to the moment you’re ready to make your decision.

How the Review Works: Five Steps, Start to Finish

Each step is straightforward. We handle the legal complexity so you don’t have to.

1

Upload Your Agreement

Send us your settlement agreement through our secure upload system, by email, or just call and tell us you’ve received one. We’ll take it from there. If you’re not sure whether what you’ve been given actually is a settlement agreement, that’s fine. Send it over and we’ll tell you.

2

We Review It the Same Day

We go through every clause: the financial terms, the tax treatment, any restrictive covenants that might limit where you can work next, the confidentiality provisions, the reference your employer has agreed to provide, and anything else that matters. We also assess whether the amount being offered is fair for your situation.

3

We Talk It Through With You

This is the part that matters most. A 30 to 60 minute phone or video call where we explain everything in plain English. You can ask anything. We’ll tell you what’s standard, what’s unusual, what you might want to push back on, and what it all means in practice. No question is too basic.

4

Negotiate If You Want To

This step is entirely optional. If the offer looks low, or if there are clauses that need changing, we can negotiate on your behalf. Our fee for negotiation is 35% of any financial increase we achieve. If we don’t get you more, you don’t pay anything for the negotiation. The review itself remains free regardless.

5

Sign Off When You’re Ready

Once you’re satisfied with the terms, we provide the legal certificate confirming you’ve received independent advice. This makes the agreement binding and allows your employer to process the payment. If you’re not satisfied, you don’t have to sign. You always have the final say.

What to Expect From Us

We’ll be honest with you. If the agreement is fair, we’ll say so. If it’s not, we’ll explain why and tell you what your options are. We won’t pressure you to negotiate if there’s nothing worth negotiating, and we won’t rush you into signing before you’re comfortable.

You should also know that we only practise employment law. We don’t handle property, wills, or commercial disputes. This is all we do, every day. That means we’ve seen the same types of settlement agreement clauses hundreds of times and we know which ones cause problems after signing.

(This is the part most people don’t realise: the clauses that look harmless are often the ones that matter most. A badly worded restrictive covenant or a vague reference clause can create real difficulties down the road.)

Bristol’s Employment Landscape

Bristol is the economic engine of the South West, with nearly half a million residents and one of the most diverse employment markets outside London. Settlement agreements arise across every sector here, but some industries produce more than others.

🏥 Healthcare and NHS

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, North Bristol NHS Trust (Southmead Hospital)

Bristol’s two major NHS trusts together employ more than 25,000 people. In the healthcare sector, settlement agreements commonly arise around performance management, capability processes, stress-related absences, and organisational restructuring. A specialist solicitor will check whether any underlying unfair dismissal or discrimination claims affect the value of the offer.

🎓 Higher Education

University of Bristol, University of the West of England (UWE Bristol)

The higher education sector across the UK is under significant financial pressure, with many universities running voluntary severance schemes and restructuring academic departments. Settlement agreements in this sector typically involve fixed-term contract endings, departmental reorganisations, and redundancy situations. Academic and professional services staff both face these situations, and the terms can vary considerably.

✈️ Aerospace and Engineering

Airbus (Filton), Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, GKN Aerospace

Bristol’s aerospace sector is worth over £2.7 billion and employs thousands across the North Bristol corridor. Settlement agreements in this industry often involve complex restrictive covenants, intellectual property clauses, and senior departure terms. The financial sums tend to be higher, which makes specialist review even more important.

🏦 Financial Services

Lloyds Banking Group, Hargreaves Lansdown, Triodos Bank

Financial services employs tens of thousands of people in Bristol, making it one of the city’s most significant sectors. Settlement agreements here can involve bonus disputes, whistleblowing situations, senior exits, and restructuring. Regulatory obligations sometimes add complexity to these agreements, and it is worth checking whether any ongoing regulatory issues affect your position.

💻 Tech and Digital

OVO Energy, Graphcore, Ultraleap, and Bristol’s growing startup ecosystem

Bristol’s tech sector is the fastest growing in the city, sometimes referred to as “Silicon Gorge.” Fast-growing companies can produce settlement agreements during performance management, restructuring as they scale, or changes in direction. Stock options, intellectual property assignments, and non-compete clauses are all common features in tech sector agreements that need careful review.

🏛️ Public Sector

Bristol City Council, Government Agencies, Public Bodies

Public sector employers tend to follow well-documented HR processes, and many prefer to resolve employment disputes through settlement rather than tribunal proceedings. Budget pressures often drive restructuring decisions. While the process may feel more formal, the same legal principles apply, and it is just as important to check whether the offer reflects the strength of any underlying claims.

Why Choose a Specialist Over a Local General Practice?

Bristol has plenty of solicitors. Many of them are excellent at what they do. But most handle settlement agreements occasionally, alongside conveyancing, family law, and commercial work. Here’s why that distinction matters:

What matters Specialist (us) General practice firm
Volume Review agreements daily Handle occasionally
Assessment tools Eligibility checker, clause scanner, fair value estimator Standard service
Tribunal backup Full tribunal representation available if needed Often no tribunal practice
Pricing Transparent: review free, negotiation 35% of increase only Often hourly rates
Convenience Remote: phone, video, secure upload City centre office visits

The practical difference is that a specialist spots problems a generalist might miss. A restrictive covenant that looks standard to someone who sees them occasionally looks very different to someone who sees them every day. The same applies to tax treatment, to reference clauses, and to confidentiality provisions that could catch you out later.

How We Help Bristol Employees

The Remote Process

Everything happens by phone, video call, and secure document upload. You don’t need to visit an office, find parking in the city centre, or take time off work for an appointment. Settlement agreement reviews are a document-based service: we need to read the agreement and talk to you about it. That works just as well remotely as it does face to face, and for most people it’s considerably more convenient.

Bristol Employment Tribunal

If your settlement agreement isn’t right, or if you decide not to sign, the alternative is usually an employment tribunal claim. Bristol Employment Tribunal sits at the Bristol Civil and Family Justice Centre, 2 Redcliff Street, Bristol BS1 6GR, about a ten minute walk from Temple Meads station. It covers the entire South West region.

We mention this not because we want you to end up at tribunal, but because knowing you have that option strengthens your position. When your employer knows you have access to a solicitor who also handles tribunal claims, the dynamics of any negotiation shift. We offer no win no fee tribunal representation if it comes to that.

Understanding Your Deadline

Under the Employment Rights Act 1996 (section 203), a settlement agreement is only valid if you’ve received independent legal advice. Your employer must give you a reasonable period to consider the agreement. In practice, the minimum is usually 10 calendar days (this is the Acas Code of Practice recommendation), though some employers allow longer. If you’re feeling pressured to sign quickly, that’s worth flagging with us. Time pressure is sometimes a tactic, and you don’t have to accept an unreasonable deadline.

Common Questions From Bristol Employees

Do I need a solicitor based in Bristol for settlement agreement advice?

No. Settlement agreements are reviewed remotely in virtually all cases. A Bristol office address doesn’t improve the quality of advice: specialist expertise does. We handle everything by phone, video, and secure document upload. Many Bristol employees prefer this because it avoids the need to visit a city centre office during what’s already a stressful time.

How quickly can you review my settlement agreement?

Same day in most cases. If you upload your agreement in the morning, we can typically complete the review and have a consultation call with you by the afternoon. We understand that deadlines create pressure, and we work to match that urgency. If your situation is genuinely time-critical, let us know and we’ll prioritise accordingly.

Which Employment Tribunal covers Bristol?

Bristol Employment Tribunal, located at the Bristol Civil and Family Justice Centre, 2 Redcliff Street, Bristol BS1 6GR. It covers the entire South West region. If your settlement agreement isn’t right and you need to pursue a claim, this is where it would be heard. The building is about ten minutes on foot from Temple Meads station.

My employer chose me a solicitor from their list. Do I have to use them?

No. You have the right to choose any solicitor you want. Your employer’s list is a suggestion, not a requirement. Some people feel more comfortable choosing their own solicitor, particularly one who specialises exclusively in employment law and doesn’t also act for employers. The employer contribution applies regardless of which solicitor you choose.

I work at a university in Bristol. Are settlement agreements common in higher education?

Yes. Universities across the UK are facing significant financial pressures, and settlement agreements are a regular feature of how restructuring is managed in the sector. They arise around fixed-term contract endings, departmental reorganisations, voluntary severance schemes, and performance management situations. If you’ve been offered one, it’s worth getting specialist advice to check whether the terms reflect any underlying claims you might have.

What if I work in Bristol but live elsewhere?

It makes no difference at all. Settlement agreements don’t have geographical boundaries, and neither does our service. Whether you live in Clifton and work in Filton, or commute in from Bath, Portishead, or further afield, the process is exactly the same.

Can you negotiate with Bristol employers?

Yes. If we review your agreement and believe the offer is below what’s reasonable, we can negotiate on your behalf. We handle the discussions directly with your employer’s legal team. Our fee for this is 35% of any financial increase we achieve. If we don’t improve the offer, you don’t pay anything for the negotiation work.

What happens if I decide not to sign?

That’s entirely your decision, and we’ll support you either way. If the agreement isn’t fair, or if you’d rather pursue a tribunal claim, we can advise you on the alternatives. We offer no win no fee tribunal representation, so rejecting a poor settlement doesn’t leave you without options. What matters is that you make an informed choice.

Is a settlement agreement the same as a compromise agreement?

Yes. The name changed in 2013 under the Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act, but the legal effect is identical. If your employer refers to a “compromise agreement,” they mean a settlement agreement. Older template documents sometimes still use the old name.

How do I know if my offer is fair?

This is one of the questions we hear most often, and it’s exactly what our review is designed to answer. Start with our free Fair Value Estimator to get an initial range. Then, during the review, we’ll assess the offer in context: your salary, length of service, the circumstances of your departure, and whether you have any underlying claims that could increase its value. We’ll give you a straight answer.
